Opening "Lilium": Beautful artwork and the same can be said for the song... which is in Latin so I don't understand it at all...
Ending "be your girl": Song's okay. All there is in the way of animation is just a zoom into a picture of Nyuu.
I hope y'all can stand blood since there's plenty to go around this first episode. Tempy said that the manga was pretty bloody and the anime is definitely that. Anyways... yes, it starts off bloody. A girl is confined.. but she's already killed the guards around her with some strange power.. she works her way through the place she's been kept, killing numerous guards.. decapiting more than a few. Yeah... she makes her way out and is shot by a sniper, but he doesn't kill her. She falls into the ocean....
A cousin of Kouta's, Yuka has come. They played often on the beach as kids so they both go there. And that girl from earlier is there.. she's unclothed and hurt and can only say "nyuu". She also has two horns on her head. They take her back with them. Kouta gives her the name, "Nyuu", since that's all she's said. It doesn't seem like she can do anything on her own.. As Nyuu's looking through a bag of Kouta's she gets out a shell that Kouta's younger sister gave him when he was a child. That sister died from an illness.. Nyuu breaks the shell, probably thinking it was something bad since Kouta was about to cry, but Kouta gets angry and yells at Nyuu and she runs away..
Back to the place where Nyuu was confined. She's called Lucy by the people there. A team has been sent to get rid of her, including one tough guy. Really tough guy, punches a woman out saying "Don't stand behind me".
And that's it for now. To say the least, I'm interested. The music for the show is interesting.. Given that's it Elfen Lied there's a choral song (the opening is a solo of the song) like something you'd hear in a church that's repeated a couple of times. The title's "Lilium", "lily" in Latin, and the song is in Latin as well (as best I can tell. I'm going to have to ask a favor of my Latin-speaking friends, I guess). The title for the next ep is given in Japanese as 掃討 soutou, meaning "cleaning up". But written in the background is vernichtung, meaning "destruction" in German. Interesting..
I will keep blogging elfen lied if somebody out there wants me to. The title's already been licensed by ADV, so I dunno if a major fansub group will pick it up.
Edited 6:25PM: Been doing some Googling on some of the text of "Lilium". Seems like it's been taken from some medieval Catholic liturgy. I found the last couple of lines:
O quam sancta, quam serena, quam benigna, quam amoena
O castitatis lilium
in a chant called "Ave mundi spes Maria". castitatis lilium means "pure lily", but I don't know what anything else there means. You'll also hear "Kyrie eleison" in the song. It means "Lord have mercy", from Greek.
Is Elfen Lied based one of those H-game turned anime series? I'm intrigued by how morbid it is... Please do keep blogging on it if you can :)
No, it's not. It's based on the manga which was serialized in Shueisha's Young Jump. I haven't read the manga yet, but plan on getting a few volumes when I get some more stuff from amazon.co.jp.

I'm so glad someone's watching the anime! Since ADV has licensed it, I'm watching it raw too and I'm very glad they retained the blood in the anime! I was hoping for some bloodshed in Gantz but I was a bit disappointed. This one more than compensates it. Please keep blogging. The story is kinda interesting and the best bit is that those cute girls fool everyone into thinking this is a light-hearted comedy when it's a bloody dark tragedy.
This looks really interesting, especially when I do like morbid stuff. But I'm so busy that I haven't even started on my current folder full of the entire 50 episodes of Gundam Seed (Urgh! I must try to finish all of them before the sequel starts in Oct!!!)...
Do keep blogging about it if it continues to be interesting. Might pick it up after the current series I'm watching comes to an end.

This anime rocks. Thanks for the guys doing the fan subs out there. I was absolutely capivated by the opening track and artwork. I wish I could remember the artist they are emulating. Question, does anyone know where I can find the opening song??? I have been searching to no avail, and I can't wait for the OST to come out.

The opening song 'Lilium' is sung by Kondo Yukio. The end song 'Be Your Girl' is performed by Hinata Megumi.
I read someplace that the OST for Elfen Lied is to be released this month (October) but haven't heard anything about it yet. Here's some info on what I found out on the opening music Lilium: music by MOKA (YUKIO KONDO & KAYO KONISHI), MOKA stands for "moon cats" I think, I found 月海猫 which is "tsuki umi neko" in romaji, I think umi means ocean so maybe the real translation is lunar ocean cats or something... I did searches in Google and even some japanese search engines (I don't know how to read Japanese and tried anyway, haha), with no luck finding any useful data, though I did find this website which has a bit of stuff in it but nothing much... http://www.geocities.co.jp/Hollywood/5205/artists_moka.html. Also, if people are interested in this type of music I think the technical genre is "Chamber Music" ? If not what is this kind of music called? (i.e. if I wanted to try it at the local library...?). I ama doring this series, seen up to episode 12 and wow it has caught me close to my heart, you really can't hate Nyuu/Lucy at all, she's so hurt..

Somebody really needs to get this song (lilium) out there on the net. The only luck I've had was over file sharing programs and I'm sure you all know what THATS like...
The only thing I don't like about the series so far in nyuu. If she had stayed like Lucy I think it could have made for a much better series, but I suppose they were going for the adorable little girl with a psychotic side thing, to get people to love the character and all.

Lilium would be more like sacred music...chamber is music played in a salon or the like...so i wouldn't classify it like that. So basically, it would be church music..A4L and ARupt are subbing it still afaik...last ep is out soon...looking for OP ^^ ... we shall see

thank you Noltia for finding the OST but in this OST there is only 2 versions of lilium LILIUM ~opening version~ and LILIUM ~saint version~ but in the final episode of Elfen Lied there is a extended part of lilium maybe that version is going to be in the singers cd.
And the manga scans can be found on hongfire.com or by searching on suprnova.org i think they have a 1-8 pack of the translated manga.
And one final thing I have read in some forums that in the manga lucy fights with more Diclonius like with #85 or #89 I think so there may be a second season of this.
Elcareldecali, I created a remix using the two versions of Lilium on the OST, as well as an extract from episode 13 that fits very nicely in my remix. I think you might be pleased with this as well as most other fans of this music: http://members.shaw.ca/coteesh/elfenlied/ The reason I did this is so I can have a nice long (almost 6 minutes) version of Lilium that the OST doesn't provide ;) I'm not sure if my webspace has a bandwidth quota though so hopefully thousands of people won't download all at once ;)
I also did a remix of Lilium when I got tired of waiting for the realese of the OST. I joined the opening with the part of 13 my remix was like 4 minutes long. coteesh you remix sound good too

If anyone wants the longer version of Lilium someone has gone to great trouble to 'reconstruct' it using elements from the series. They have managed to put together a pretty sweet (I'd say flawless) edit that matches what is played during the last minutes of Elfen Lied 13. I can also make a remix to reconstruct the ending of episode 13 in high quality, but I like the men's voices a lot in the remix I already did so I think I'll stick with that for a while in my going-to-work music CD ;) I bet Elcarteldecali's remix is similar to the 128 kbps one that DeadMan is talking about. Sometimes there are multiple OST's for anime series... maybe another OST will be released with the proper long version?
I hope the longer Version will be released in future. The Soundtrack is fantastic. Before the realease i ripped the opening song, but it's not the same ^^

My name is Kyle Johnson and I am going to school for music at central florida...after hearing about this series i quickly jumped to find all 13 episodes...like everyone else i waited impatiently for the ost to become available to listen to...after hearing both the ost and the remix made by a person on this blog i have decided to write out his re-arranged version of lilium...with my finale program i should be done with the original version (part 1...opening) in 3 weeks (or sooner) as soon as i am finished i will write a post and someone can help me put the midi on this site...thank you for making a site dedicated to such an amazing anime...and i will keep you all informed.

Hello, I'm Mickaël from France. I just wanted to make the title and sources of the manga a little clearer. Like every title of episode, the name itself of the series"Elfen Lied" is German, but not translated. Basically,"Elfen Lied" means "song of the elves" or "the elf song". In Germanic mythology, the "elves" are something different from usual "tolkien-type" elves : the Elves are very graceful and charming ; they attract and invite men to dance, but when midnight strokes, they suddenly turn evil... The author of this manga/anime must be aware of that too. Must be passionated by German and Austrian culture (art with Klimt, tongue and mythology...). An interesting mix between Japanese and German culture!

It seems to be her, lucy I mean (not the innocent nyuh) hell ! who else could it be ? We see clearly that the dog recognizes who it is ! she somehow would have survived the assault, both corns were shot out so she couldn't cause any harm anymore.
It was quite cool to make such an end, it just pushes you to think of the rest.

I think there are 2 sysmbols that tell you that it is lucy at the end of ep 13. it flashes to the sea shell in the lilium box and also the clock starts to work which she was working on.

What is the meaning of "Elfen Lied"? As far as I can see the lyrics consist of different quotations:
First of all a quotation from Psalm 37,30:
"The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
And his tongue speaks justice."
Then a quotation from James 1,12:
"Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life (which the Lord has promised to those who love him)."
Thereafter a liturgy part of a "Alchemy Mass":
"Kyrie, ignis divine,( pectora nostra juva, ut pro tua laude pariter sacramenta artis expandere possimus,) Eleison."
"Kyrie. Our Lord, divine fire, (help our hearts, that we may be able, to your praise, to expand the sacraments of the art,) have mercy"
And at the end words from a Gregorian chant called "Ave Mundi Spes Maria":
"O so holy,
so serene,
so gentle,
so pleasant,
O lily of chasteness"
Of course the lily is a symbol of Mother Mary.
However, even together with the sources the meaning is still uncertain. There are 4 dismembered quotations, chopped off and all from different backgrounds. What's the purpose?
Is this product of some evangelical community or a secret association (who are used to take quotations apart and put them together in any order whatever)??
Nooooo! Looks more like a cheap marketing strategy of a Japanese producer of computer games (?), who wanted to make a new computer game look more mysterious and uncanny. You need just to mix up a little bit catholic worship of Mary, the art of Alchemy with James "crown of life" and the Psalms, elves and fairies, written in Latin and nobody would realize the mug's game.

Oh jeeze i just finished that series, extremely good. But man was it sad. Animes like that leave me thinking about them for a long time. And not necessarily in a good way. I sure hope theres a sequel.
