Skipping a summary this time...

It was a nice conclusion, I suppose, though we didn't see a some things that happened. Different than the manga, yup. Though I don't have it on hand (on my laptop which isn't here now) to refresh my memory of exactly how things went in the manga.

But, anyways, to sum things up, Elfen Lied is definitely my pick of the summer shows this year. I had never seen anything so violent before, but neither have I seen anything so absolutely tragic. Nothing goes in anyone's favor; this show is made for the types that don't like happy endings and such. It really did turn out well, and was something I looked forward to watching every week. The manga was a page turner as well.

For more complete thoughts on things that came up during Elfen Lied please see my other entries on the show. And before I end this one: a big, huge, giant thanks to those who commented on Elfen Lied, especially Orochi and Mentar. All of you guys helped me understand things better than I could have done just watching by myself. Please do the same for other shows I'm blogging now and in the future - it really is a big help. Y'all should've blogged this instead of me :)

So that's it for Elfen Lied for now. I'll have more when I can get my hands on more manga and whenever ADV gets around to releasing the DVDs here. It's a definite purchase for me :)

In case you wondering who's that behind the door at the end...

I'm absolutly sure it's Nyuu.
Because it's explicitly stated that Lucy's remaining horn broke and in the manga, she reverted to Nyuu when that happens. There's also the fact that Diclonius sense each other when they're close by and Nana didn't pick up vibes at the table.

About the OVA...
Latest info inform me that the OVA will deal with events between Ep 10 and 11 as Nana adjust to her new life in the mansion, most likely it will be pack as Ep 14 on Vol 7 of the R2-JP DVD release.

Finally the manga....
Lots of events happen in Vol.9.If you're a Mariko fan, you definitely need to get it ASAP.Myu~myu~!

Yeah, that's what I thought as well.

...too bad I can't pick up vol 9 now. You can count me among the Mariko fans ;) Just hafta wait 'til January or so when I'm not poor to get some more "Myu~myu~!"

After seeing episode 13 of Elfen Lied, I think it the best anime of the season, simply because it's different from the rest of the rubbish we see produced nowadays. The story turned out to be quite good, better than what i expected for a 13 episode anime, would have been nice if it was longer, I was expecting a battle between Bando and Lucy.

I want to think Lucy/Nyu is behind the door, although I doubt Lucy/Nyu escaped unscathed. It wouldn't suprise me if another girl that comes into Kouta life, there already been 4. :)

Thanks Mathew for blogging this series and others for posting about Elfen Lied, continue the great work.

Name three animes which managed to give a decent sense of _closure_ to their season while the manga was still ongoing.

1) Ai Yori Aoshi first season
2) .... ?

They totally reshuffled the events and gave Lucy a strong tilt to her "good" side. I know of 1-2 manga fans who hated this. I for sure loved it :)

Very good ending, and yet at the same time allows for a second season. Well done.

Whooa, I really LOVE this anime. Ok, call me softie, but I positively HOWLED while watching this. But what I feel was left hanging in the air is the issue of 'da boss' of the programme, and the warning Lucy gave... any clues in the manga about that?

=totem= said:

Oh, and another note - about Lycu deserving our pity. Remember that "Beauty and the Beast is in the eye of the beholder". We do not form ourselves. Others shape us. What has Lucy experienced? Being abandoned like a piece of trash, confronted with outright hostility or at best insincerity (remeber that teacher, when she was sick, all cutey-honey but commenting in such a way once she thought she's not heard). If no matter what you do you get pounded, even the weakest person will break and blindly pound back. Lucy's nightmare is she has A LOT to pound back with. Up until Kouta she was but a mirror, returning fair and square whatever was thrown at it. But then she made a mistake. Kouta betrayed her trust by telling a lie, but it was too late whe she saw what that lie was - just another sign of care, of trying not to hurt her feelings. And it is obvious she spent the rest of her days regretting that mistake.
Perhaps my vision is skewed by age, but remember we all die. And no death is ever 'timely'. Yes, she did kill his dad and sister, only to be tormented by the realisation of that for the rest of her life. Kouta says he cannot forgive, but then his words - about his love and her gathering bad memories too - seem to contradict this earlier statement. Maybe it is more like reminding her that nothing can erase that past and this is something that will always be between them, but I actually think he HAS forgiven. It would be inhuman not to.

about the last scene, i think it was lucky, perhaps cos of loss of her powers due to last horn loss, nana weren't able to feel her presence. just my imho. i know it's a bit naive to think like this but i know anyone want's lucky be alive :)

James said:

I think it's pretty certain that it's Nyu/Lucy; The way Kouta looks at the door for a while before he steps out to get it suggests to me that he sorta knows who it is.

In the final short scene where Lucy fights the Soldiers, we only see 2 Vectors go up in the air. I thought she was just deflecting the bullets being fired at her with the other two but it's a bit of a coincidence since she lost on of her horns - does the manga state what happens if one of her horns breaks?

this is my take on it , sometimes in an anime
+ manga that are on the same show they take a different path at some stage + have toally diferent outcomes. So we will just have to sit and wait to see , For an Ova/second seaon season + see if it takes the same path as the manga

e.g orphen manga is totally diff from the anime

The manga is alot differet after these 13 eps ,( i haven't read it only hear a few things) but if this series Stops right now, and they dont make a OVA/MOVIE/Second Season EVER AGAIN. it would be a crap outcome to of just got rid of lucy.

Now for the question Nyuu? or lucy?

If you based on what you just saw in the anime , it could be Nyuu or lucy outside ,

One of the big reason i think it would be a better outcome if it is Lucy , is because all of the Past story with Kouta +lucy when they were kids, got you really attached to lucy( even though she is a killer!!!) , her feelings seem so much more real them her child like Nyuu. side ,i love Nyuu but it would be crap to kill of lucy since she has a past with kouta and has been waiting years to see him again , + the last ep.s

but as someone has said before

"well, like I've said, with the current state of the ending, anyone can think anything about the ending. many people think it's a sad ending, many people think it's a happy ending, many people think it's a bittersweet ending,"

But I Belive this anime has A HAPPY ENDING, i think the best outcome would be lucy came back but ,with the memorys that Nyuu had to ,

I just finished watching the series. There has to be an OVA. Many things were unsettled. (like lucy and kouta relationship, the human and diclonius - remember that director kurama's boss is a male diclonius too(not to mention his son), somehow kouta, lucy, nana must stop him from spreading the virus) I wish lucy gets together with kouta in the end. (make love? -_-) Lucy looks cuter and cuter every episode.

I need more lucy!

Joseph said:

I definitely think it was Nyu/Lucy too... If anime ended like that, then it has to be Lucy/Nyu... Unless they decide to be like Matantei Loki Ragnarok.. I, too, wish that Lucy and Kouta would be together... But then, at the same time, I sorta want Yuka and Kouta to be together, too... haha... I haven't gotten a chance to read the manga yet... (I've downloaded couple of scanslated ones till like vol. 2, but that's way in the beginning...) So I am just curious.. No one dies after that, right? I mean, Nana, Mayu, Wanta, Yuka, Kouta, and Lucy all live? That's what I am hoping anyway. :x I would be very thankful for the info. ^_^

Well, I guess I was the only one who like the couple Kouta/Yuka. They´re make a lovely couple to me...
Anyway, suberb series, one of the best anime I ever see.
Im waiting for Ovas too :P, I wanna see a full scale war between diclonius and humans. :)Ok, at least I wanna know what happens to Lucy, and the proyect, and Bandou and Nana and Kouta and Yuka...er... you get the idea... :D

heard that it where a roumor that there will be a season 2.. i really really hope there will..because the ending was a sort of a cliffhanger and...You want to see more! It can't end just like that... It would be foolish if their not continuing the serie..

Haran Banjo said:

I've just finished to watch the anime, with italian subs.
Well, absolutely, one of the best anime I've ever seen.
The final embrace between Lucy/Nyu and Kouta made me very sad, but hopeful, all the scene was realized very well.

I NEED a season 2... I need to know Lucy/Nyu is alive.

Azer said:

its a open ending: )
actually a kinda great way to finish it serious.. you have to use your own imagination to figure it out: )

well ofc i think its nyu thats outside there, some of things kouta said about he wouldent let her go and harm another person, realy tells me she was gonna "fake it" or something like that

anywayz great serie, kinda great story.. reminds me abit of the kenshin trust an betrayl : ) *dunno why*
cheers

You all seem to be missing that importence of the musik box and the clock, the music box was what Lucy liked and Nyu liked the clock and was trying to fix it a lot of the time and at the end the imporance of the fact that the music box stops but the clock starts working again so this posablys means that it is Nyu on the other side of the dor and not lucy

Guido said:

Elfen Lied superb in almost every aspect.

One of the sad things about the story in both anime and manga is that they left out spiritual issues, though.

About the music box, I remind to you all that the tune played slower and slower until it eventually stopped, before the grandfather clock chimed.

The tune did not stop in a sudden or abrupt, but fade out in its given time. This meaning could possibly hint:

a) Lucy's well, but she hasn't her horns so now she's tamed, and her mentality is fixed. It will up to her to choose whether or not forgive humanity by either deciding to stay with Kouta & the family in the manor or living utterly alone by herself.

or

b) In a near future, Lucy's personality will finally realize some possibility of a hope. She'll come terms with herself and finally pass away to leave Nyu in care and entrust her to live for her.

Unlike the rest of the mainstream fandom, I do NOT believe that the girl at the front gate is either of the two. My take on that scene is that Kouta is just imagining that she's there when in fact, it is another person.

Just look carefully at both his gesture and eyes. They appear vacant and black, without no sign of emotion.

Again, that scene has two meanings:

a) Explains that Kouta's in despair because everytime that someone arrives at the inn, he thinks it's HER but turns out to be someone different, discouraging him in hopelessness.

However.....

b) Kouta has not given up and is sure that someday when the next visitor arrives and opens the door it will be HER, implying that his hope did get reward after thinking over and over about her image in his mind.

I tend to utterly disagree with Matthew that "NOTHING GOES IN ANYONE'S FAVOR".
Very prime example that contradicts that statement of his is nonetheless than Nana.

After a nightmarish life of isolation and cruelty, experimentation upon her; being beaten like a yapping dog (literally her limbs ripped from her) first by Lucy and later by Mariko; witnesssing how her "Papa" was blown to bits; she was able to become friends with Mayu, she became a new family member at the manor, and she decided to return and stay with her newlyfound family that DID expected her to come back.

Overall, Nana lost someone important to her, but she gained a loving family, and a place she can assuredly call 'home'.

Like everybody else, I'm also expectant for a continuation; profoundly deserves it.
I cannot accept Elfen Lied to end like that, plus it was unfair that they left out another female character that only appears in the manga.

Doc_Kahn said:

It was Nyu at the end.

1- DOG barks happily.
2- CLOCK starts running.
3- MUSICBOX stops.

4- The only reproductive diclonius is lucy and the president of the company states the operation started newly. As he is one of them, he can never let them destroy lucy, but made them to think like that.

5- Removal of one of the horns gives conciousness to lucy, Removal of both horns ends in giving lucys conciousness to nyu (stated in series.)

Easy isn't it? But kouta may feel sorry because he both loved lucy and nyu...

However I really wished to see who's behind the door with the scenarists eyes.

The series ended as it may or may not continue so, people who loved this show please buy dvds. The producers may decide continuing if enough profit is made. I got the series from the net, watched them , but I bought them also. Do as I did at least for the sake of all anime lovers...

Your wrong. Lucy did not become Lucy after having one of her horns broken, she was Lucy anyway throughout fighting Mariko.

I would like for Lucy to still be alive. Although Nyuu was cute and beginning to understand and speak their language, she's just too cute and she's not the one that Kouta fell in love with.

I'm not too sure if the musicbox and clock mean anything, but the musicbox didn't suddenly stop and as the last note played, the clock chimed.

I'm taking the approach that Lucy and Nyuu merged together into one person instead of them both being split personalities because at some point in her life, Nyuu must have been a part of Lucy.

This is a long shot, but Nyuu could have been Lucy's humane side but the voices were her Diclonious side, because when the 'owner' of the voice removed the bandages, she was Diclonious.

When Lucy's life got really bad, the personalities began to seperate and the Diclonious 'side' of her became stronger than her humane side. She went through so much pain that the trauma or whatever caused her personalities to split in two and it probably happened when she realized that Kouta had lied to her because she had strong feelings for him. The guilt for murdering his sister and father probably didn't help.

As far as the vectors are concerned. At the end, I thought that she'd only decided to use two vectors, or that the other two were doing something else, but then I remembered how she appeared when her horn was broken off, so the theory that she only had two vectors actually makes a lot of sense.

Also, Kouta said that he'd feel responsible if she hurt anyone else, Lucy wanted to be with Kouta, so she pulled off her other horn, eliminating her powers completely, so that even if she wanted to hurt another person, she wouldn't be able to due to the fact that her vectors are gone.

That's my theory anyway.

(sorry if there aren't any spaces, I couldn't figure out what was wrong and in preview mode, it doesn't look like there are)
