Otaku Expressions #3: More Ways To Say かわいい (Kawaii)

This time, a few more expressions you can use to say how かわいい kawaii (cute) something is ;) For the examples this time I'll be using a few of the shows I've been watching but not blogging recently. btw, I should mention that you'll see kawaii written in hiragana かわいい, katakana カワイイ, and kanji 可愛い, so if you're writing in Japanese use whichever you want.

可奈ちゃん超かわいい!
Kana-chan choukawaii

chou is a prefix roughly equivalent to "super", so "super cute!". And that would be my thoughts about Kana in episode 3 of Canvas 2. Sakura Elis is pretty cute as well... yet another "onii-chan" type (and cousin), and... she reminds me of a certain character from a certain other series ;)

New shows can give us some new ways of saying kawaii, be it by using something from the title -- 極上にかわいい gokujou ni kawaii from 極上生徒会 Gokujou Seitokai -- or during the show itself. I'm sure most of y'all are familiar with the version used in Paniponi Dash! ;)

シャナオメガカワイイ!
Shana omegakawaii!

Despite what might others might say, I find Shana extremely cute. And she was at her cutest in episode 3 while eating her favorite food, melon pan :)

And if you want, make up your own expression using kawaii by combining a certain aspect of a character you find cute in some way with kawaii. Some popular ones are エロかわいい erokawaii (usually followed with a (*´Д`)ハァハァ, of course), ツンデレかわいい tsunderekawaii (Jagi-san often uses this to describe Altessa from Futago Hime), and ロリかわいい rorikawaii (Nanami-san particularly likes this expression, used in this entry to describe Madoka-chan in Da Capo Second Season). In the case of Nanami from Lamune...

ななみポンコツかわいい!
Nanami ponkotsukawaii!

From the beginning of episode 1 of Lamune. Ponkotsu originally was used to describe a machine that's broken, but when used with anime characters it refers to one that's a bit... well, not quite all there all the time, a bit ditzy, you might say. Nanami would be that kind of character, and she's cute, both little and grown up, so... Kenji's such a lucky guy ;) I was kinda popular with the girls when I was that age (little Kenji's age), and for a brief few months I was able to experience just a bit of the whole "childhood friend" thing, but... well, I'm not such a lucky guy. I certainly didn't get to do what he did in the flashback in episode 2 :P Ahem... sorry, I tend to get all natsukashii when watching shows like this ;)

So now y'all know more than a few ways to express how something's cute, so use what you've learned. Next time... well, I dunno what I'm going to teach y'all next time. I'll think about it ;)

Well said, Shana is omega-tera-chou-kawaii, anyone who says otherwise is committing blasphemy ^_^

Heh, I'm still quite fumed over what John said about Shana.

Not so much about his opinion of the show because you can't possibly believe everyone will favor it, but you'd have to be absolutely out of your mind to not appreciate the art.

P.S. ~ Somebody needs to sub Ramune!

Shana is the cutest sword wielding girl I've ever seen. XD

GAH it's Ellis, not Elis, like Lunar says, how many ppl must get it wrong, it's stated with 2 ll's on the main site as well as in the game :(

C-fan, on Kadokawa's site for the ps2 game her name is given as Elis:

I don't really care, either way is okay with me ;)

Sheeze, I'm not sure John and I watched the same show. He seemed to completely miss one very important piece of information. The torches are put into place to temper the loss of existance so that those who's essence was eaten gradually dissapear. The show's dialogue explains this and explains WHY they do it, if they didn't the change would be too abrupt and cause major catastrophe. So yes it makes sense to create replacements, those people's existance will end but how sudden determines the greater effect that has on society. I understand that not everyone likes the same things but it's hard to accept a reason for not liking it that makes no sense and the show explains why it makes no sense in the first two episodes! :P

Not to mention I can't see how he thinks Shana's not cute, maybe he doesn't like the tsuntsun part of personality. :P She's omega-kawaii when eating her melon bread though. ^_^ Judging by the OP she's going to start being less hateful/haughty as the story progresses, we're already seeing some of that. I think she'll end up being chou-kawaii and continue to kick some major butt too. ^_-
