Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club 13

Sasami and Misao, holding hands (Misao rather likes that), follow Ryo-Ohki back to... the school? Turns out that in the usual Mahou Shoujo Club meeting place there's a portal to the Witches' World that Ryo-Ohki opens.... Then why didn't they use that earlier? ;) Sasami and Misao make it just in time for the group competition, which consists of flying on a broom though all sorts of enviroments (isn't it a bit dangerous?) to get to a mountain where they're supposed to make flowers bloom on a tree. Makoto-chan tries first -- a rather odd flower grows. The flowers reflect what's in your heart, apparently. Anri tries next -- and as expected, Tsukasa-sama's face is on the flower. Tsukasa takes a picture of it with her phone (^^;;) Makoto and Anri have their usual fight as the other groups have already gotten flowers, all of the same kind on their trees, to bloom...

Meanwhile, Washu has found Sasami's father -- he asks Washu how the mahou shoujo got their powers, and Washu gives the official explanation that it was the will of the earth and such... Sasami's father says that someone opened the "Witches' Cauldron" , surprising Washu, then he disappears.. but he shouldn't be able to use magic or anything...

Sasami hears Ami-chan's song... who's he? He's the boy Sasami likes. Whaaaaaaaaat!? Tsukasa-sama is jealous, actually. Anri is shocked ;) Anri and Makoto start fighting as they usually do.. Misao remembers holding hands with Sasami earlier, so she suggests that they all do that now. It gives a strange warmness... Anri holds hands when she's taking care of her brothers... Makoto remembers her preschool teacher holding her hand when she was crying... Tsukasa remembers her parents holding her hands when she was having fun... The girls' hearts finally one, a beautiful flower blooms on their tree.

Well, Sasami and the rest didn't win but they're still proud of their flower, thinking it the best one out there. After the award ceremony, they sing that song again... Switch to the miko walking up to a well of water -- she speaks to something about what the mahou shoujo have done there. Whatever it is apparently tells her to do something and she agrees...

Washu's plannning for the group to go back to the old lady's house that they stayed at on their first trip to the Witches' World to have dinner. Sasami's got something else she has to do first -- Washu eventually gives her permission and she runs off. She goes back to the pond where she danced with Ami-chan and calls for him... but he doesn't come. She smiles and says goodbye... We see Ami-chan being held in confinement somewhere...

It's time for the girls to head back home, so they head to the train station. Misao asks Sasami if she met Ami-chan, and Sasami says yes. Sasami then takes Misao's hand -- the others hold hands as well. The next they come Sasami says they should bring something for the old lady, some candy or cakes and such. They are the cooking club, after all :)

Looks like they've finally joined together to become a team now :) What happened to Ami-chan? What's Sasami's father doing? We've still got 13 more episodes to go... but we'll have to wait few months for the next episode to see the answers to those questions _| ̄|○ It does seem like they were planning on going 26 from the start, but perhaps needed a break in the middle because of scheduling or to make sure the quality didn't fall too much. Whatever the reason, I'm happy it's not over just quite yet :)

Really nice quality, very cute animation for the most part this last episode, a bit different style than usual with some airbrush on the cheeks a lot of the time among other things. Hopefully the quality can stay high for the second season for as long as it did this time, with only a few episodes turning out below normal.

Anyways, I've enjoyed things so far, especially the emphasis on Sasami and the others' everyday life and coming to grips with who they are as mahou shoujo, all in her own way. It's probably the least mahou I've seen in any mahou shoujo, but that made things a bit different than the usual. The mahou shoujo emphasis on themes of friendship and family, with a bit of love thrown in, were still there and brought out very well. Hopefully the second half won't run all serious and we'll get some more everyday life episodes in there, but we'll see.

I've gotten completely used to the voices now, and they oddly seem to fit well. Perhaps it's giving it a bit more a touch of reality with girls around the age of the characters in the show doing the voices, I dunno (and they're rather normal compared to, say, Aya Hirano's natural voice, hehe). Most all of them have gotten better, especially Sasami's, so GJ! Y'all keep working on it between seasons ;)

And the next episode preview for an episode that we won't see until October or November:

...speculate away. And just a suggestion here... give Makoto-chan a chance to sing in the OP for the second season, please ;)

And to end things for now, the usual character ranking:
Misao >>>> Makoto >>>> Sasami >>>> Tsukasa-sama >>>> Anri

I'll be back in a few months with the second season, of course, so until then ;)
