Midori no Hibi 13 (END)

Most of y'all have seen this by now, so I'll go on ahead and write my thoughts about it now. It is a happy ending just as you'd imagine (that cat even got a girlfriend, lol) and this episode went over with me a lot better than some of the previous episodes, but still... something's been missing here and there in Midori no Hibi. The manga chapters chosen to fill some of the episodes didn't really go together sometimes, and since they only had 13 episodes to cram all of the manga into a lot of corners were cut. I wouldn't mind if those were just some of the stories that weren't all that important, but some of Midori's character development in the manga got cut from the anime, leaving only the last few episodes to finally throw in the drama from Midori's feelings that was introduced earlier in the manga. I just feel it could've been done a bit better, and done even better if there had been more time to work with.

But as things are, it's not all that bad. It does manage to really be laugh-out-loud funny sometimes and that's when it's at its best. The technical aspects of the show were well done. Pierrot did a nice job with the animation. The opening and ending were the best of the spring shows, I think, and the music itself was decent.

Honestly, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in Midori no Hibi, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth watching once. I'd say watch it, but pick up the manga and read it if you can.

Midori finally returns to her body and Seiji has some trouble dealing with it, it seems. Well, for a bit, then he's back to his old ways, beating up people and buying pr0n ;) And yeah.. all you Ayase fans out there will be happy :) I wonder how things'll wrap up next time...

Another mix of comedy and more serious things this time. Takako came up with another plan to get Seiji, but... failure again. Poor thing... Meanwhile... Midori's mom has hired all kinds of people (witch doctors, oriental medicine types, etc.) to try and wake up Midori, but none are working so far. So Kouta decides to go and talk to Seiji again. When he gets to the school some ruffians that tried to beat up Seiji earlier are there and Kouta mistakes them for friends of Seiji's. They take him away as hostage.. Miya catches up to Seiji as he's having a meal (and oogling the waitress), so Seiji goes to take care of business, and does with Midori's help... But in helping out, Kouta knows about her now.. Maybe.. if he doesn't forget like Takamizawa did.

Well, only a couple of episodes left. Wonder how they'll wrap things up... if they'll wrap things up completely at all. Maybe they'll have a 2nd season of Midori no Hibi? Could happen, given the amount of material from the manga that hasn't been covered yet. We'll see..

We start off in a pretty comedic tone with Seiji and his underling with some girls doing some Karaoke. Seiji really likes this one girl (*pssst*, Seiji, it's Takako, you idiot!) and when they play the Ou-sama (no meirei wa zettai!) game Seiji and Takako have to do something... Takako can't stand having her first kiss with Seiji in something like this so she punches the daylights out of him and runs away. And that's all the funny stuff for this episode as...

Kouta, a childhood friend and classmate of Midori's is properly introduced this time. He asks Seji to visit Midori's house, but refuses since Midori doesn't want to do it. Then we have a lengthy flashback to Midori's first day in high school. She's very shy and stays pretty much to herself (much like I was when I was that age). She wishes she were more confident.. and as we go back to the usual time for Midori to write in her diary.. cue the ominous portent.. thunder and rain... she begins to wonder if it's really okay for her to stay as she is.

This episode went over a bit better with me since we've finally gotten to some more character building for Midori. Still haven't learned why she's like she is (assuming that'll be soon), but still. Richard is probably right that there really isn't enough time to do the drama of the manga properly, so to focus on the comedy would be better. Maybe I've been a bit too harsh. I have enjoyed watching so far :) I'm just impatient ;)

Takamizawa is back to torture Seiji again. He's remembered Midori and set up a fan site for her on the net with the pictures he took before. Seiji ain't too happy with that, but for Takamizawa to take the site down Seiji has to do something for him.. sell Midori puppets at a convention. Scary ;)

In the 2nd part of this episode, Takamizawa's got a real human girl he's interested in... only because she looks and acts like Marin-chan. Too bad she ain't exactly what he thought. Poor Takki ;)

This episode isn't really anything like the manga chapters (at least the 1st half was loosely based on the manga, the 2nd is taken from Days 46 in the manga) it's based on. Manga was a bit more funny, I think... But maybe it'll be a bit better next time :)

Think some of the past episodes, but in reverse, and you've got this episode. Seiji and Midori both have the same dream of Seiji being Midori's right hand. That's about it, really.

I'm getting kinda impatient here since I've read the manga and we still haven't gotten to some important character building things yet. Anybody know how long Midori no Hibi is scheduled to run? Suppose if it's the usual 12 episodes or so we might get to those episodes last... but the story won't really be resolved or anything since the manga is ongoing, which I really don't like. We'll see..

It's an all-out Ayase attack! Ayase is determined that this time she will get Seiji. She's got all kinds of plans cooked up, but... they all fail spectacularly since Seiji is completely oblivious to the fact that this is a d-a-t-e and that Ayase likes him. Good thing for Midori, ain't it? Good for lots of laughs this time, too :)

Next time is something I haven't read in the manga. migi te no... Seiji?

It's mostly Shiori's episode this time. She goes off to do stuff with Seiji since she doesn't want to go with her dad who's remarried to a woman that she won't accept as her mom. Guess who they run into? Good ol' Rin. That means fun :) Rin comes up with a plan to get Seiji to notice Shiori, which consists of Shiori wearing various outfits.. megane (glasses), sailor uniform, PE clothes, nekomimi (cat ears), chinese... and dominatrix? Seiji finally realizes that Rin's the one behind it all and has had enough of it. But it seems like Rin really was thinking about Shiori, trying to cheer her up a bit... or maybe she's just having fun at Seiji's expense, since when Seiji goes to take a bath somebody's there waiting for him ;)

Ayase does show up a couple of times, planning ways to get Seiji to go on a date, as usual. She actually succeeded in the end this time since Seiji agress to go to a movie (but he doesn't realize that it's a d-a-t-e).

Edited 5:14AM: Just reread some of the manga scanlation. They've really been jumping around all over the place these last few episodes. This episode had parts of (or at least was loosely based on) Days 8, 19, and 27 from the manga. Suppose it's working okay. Wonder when they'll do Days 11 and 12...

Wonder how long the anime's going to run in the first place. The first DVD w/extras will be released in July with 5 episodes on it at a very affordable 12,600 yen. 3 DVDs in all, so I guess we'll end up with around 15 episodes.

Midori and Seiji have to go through a few rough times this episode. Seiji gets in trouble with the gym teacher first.. then after coming home accidentally drinks his sister's tequila (oops!) and promptly takes a nap. And while Seiji is out, the pizza delivery guy comes, then a woman selling English learning materials, then the newspaper guy... Then Midori overworks herself and comes down with a cold, making things all that much worse. Ayase tries a plan to visit Seiji (imagined as a film like "Takamizawa no Hibi" last time) when Midori has the cold and he has to home from school, but it fails thanks to Shiori (that girl that's bugging Seiji every now and then). Then, just to top it all off, that gym teacher makes Seiji do 100 pull-ups with only his left hand. He gets to 99 and is about to let go, but Midori grabs on, so he makes it. It's アイnoチカラ ("power of love") as this episode's title says, ne?

Speaking of Shiori, she'll be back in a big way next episode. Should be fun :)

Laughed a lot more this episode than last :) Seiji takes Midori shopping for new clothes at the doll store this time. Time for some cosplay! kawaii :) However, one of Seiji's classmates, Takamizawa, is there. He's really into the doll thing, has his own Ultra Marin doll. And he finds out about Midori and wants to find out even more about her. Not good (as Seiji imagines during the pretty funny Takamizawa no Hibi segments this episode)... But he's not that bad a guy, it seems. Just wants to play dress-up with Midori a bit and take a few pictures... and wants to have Midori for his own, but Seiji takes care of that by backdropping him (Ouch!). Looks like that made him forget all about Midori, so the secret is safe.. at least for now ;)
