May 31, 2006Catching up with last week's Simoun. Spoiler-ish stuff ahead so the usual warning applies ;)

No need this time for a separate section for Noto since she was pretty much in the entire episode ;) Aeru and Morinas are out on a practice flight without permission. Aeru wants to do some complicated moves, but Morinas can't quite keep up. Once they come back they're promptly scolded. Morinas then asks Aeru for a kiss, which Aeru refuses. I think I can get to like Morinas now ;) Anyways, Nevilile has locked herself in her room, and the other members of Col Tempest seem to be pretty much the same, staying there instead of going out to fight like the other squads. Aeru's ready and raring to go when the time comes -- if they don't practice now they won't be able to handle things then. Nobody seems quite as enthusiatic, though.. the two sisters are waiting for the day when they go to the spring and choose to become guys.... yeah (^^;;)
Anyways, Aeru runs into Rimone on her way out. Rimone noticed that she was trying to do a certain Li Mersion when she was flying with Morinas. She is a genius kid, yup. She wonders if this is really Col Tempest if they're not be able to do such a simple thing. Ouch... Aeru beats on the door of Nevilile's room, asking her why she doesn't fight. Nevilile says flatly that she's never going to pair up with Aeru...
That night, Aeru finds Rimone in her usual place at the library eating snacks (lay off the snacks, Noto, really), and tells her that she'll satisfy her and asks her to come with her. Here she goes again (^^;;) She and Rimone get onboard a Simoun. Everybody's in the cafeteria now so they shouldn't be noticed, and not to worry, Aeru's brought along their portion of dinner. And finally, the time that many people in the jikkyou waited for has come -- Aeru kisses Rimone. Rimone seems more surprised than anything ;) Rimone suggests something to start off with, but Aeru wants to go out and use it in a real situation with a real enemy. They find what look to be the charred remains of a simoun...

A new Simoun pilot shevura joins the Col Tempest squad this time, Morinas@Nana Mizuki. And right off the bat all of those Simoun-specific words are thrown around all over the place. Thankfully, the words section of the Simoun website is up now, so that makes things a bit easier. Anyway, to make it short, it seems that nobody's figured out exactly how the yuri engines helical motris that powers the Simoun works, they haven't even taken it apart yet. When they repair it they're just fixing stuff they've added on, that's all. And I think that's about all of that... Anyways, Aaeru is late for a meeting of the other members of the Col Tempest squad -- apparently they're going to practice their li mersion (those shapes the Simoun shevura make in the sky with the the Simouns.. apparently there are hundreds of them) in this special "pool" in the ship that afternoon. And apparently they pick that time because Nevilile is going to be coming. Morinas seems to be set on having Nevilile as her paru (partner) and asks if she can pair up, but Nevilile says she'll pick whomever she chooses when the time comes. She asks Aaeru to pair up with Morinas -- so it wasn't quite a done deal between her and Aaeru, as simply flying together once doesn't mean that they're partners...

Skipping over some things again this time since I'm still not completely sure about all of the Simoun vocabulary yet, but I think I've got the general idea now... Aaeru seems to be a natural Simoun pilot (that idea sounds familiar somehow...), and she wants to be paired with the best of the best, Nevilile. Meanwhile, one of the girls, Eri, decides to finally go to the spring. This part I do understand since it was on the website -- in the world of Simoun, everyone is born female. Once someone turns 17 they can go to the "Spring" to become an adult and decide whether to remain a woman or become a man. Yes, you heard me correctly ;) But those that become adults can't pilot Simouns anymore. Nevilile accompanies Eri on the journey, and they finally arrive. Eri is unsure whether she wants to be a woman or a man as she enters the spring... but it seems that the decision was made for her since once she comes out she's going to be a he, her name changing to Erifu. She cries... I had imagined this as more a flashy transformation thing, but it seems to be a gradual process -- her voice will change, her chest will get smaller, and... they actually didn't explain how someone that doesn't have THAT gets one (^^;;;) Ahem... Once Nevilile comes back, she's made the decision to pair up with Aaeru and kisses her to make it official.
Less battling, more interaction between the characters kinda like this time is what I'd prefer to see in Simoun. And I'd prefer to see more of Floe and the other characters as well, but anyways. Animation quality took a noticible dip from the first episode, but it's nothing that I'm too worried about for now.
And today's Rimone@Mamiko Noto:

能登かわいいよ能登!
Noto kawaii yo Noto! (I'm required to say this)
Noto only got one line of dialogue, though _| ̄|○ More of the Rimone and Floe combo would be nice...

What is that stuff she's snacking on there? ;)

Okay, catching up with Simoun from yesterday... I can't do much of a summary since I didn't quite get everything that was going on -- something about this one country attacking this other country to steal the technology behind these Simoun things (those ships the girls ride in pairs) that apparently require yuri power to start up or something (much kissing) that are supposedly supposed to be invincible, but they're not any more as more than a few go down during the course of this episode, so the girls that pilot them (Shevura) are quitting and choosing to become guys... something like that.
Somewhat like Shana, there's a lot of terminology being thrown about that's not explained so it's easy to get lost (and the "Words" section of the website still isn't up, either...). Art and character design and such look pretty, and the music's good as well. For some reason all the aerial dogfighting (and CG ships) and such reminds me of Last Exile, but anyways... for now I can definitely say this about Simoun:

能登かわいいよ能登!
Noto kawaii yo Noto! (I'm required to say this)
I like Rimone@Mamiko Noto :) Her and Floe look like they'll make a good combo (I don't mean yuri), with Floe treating Rimone like a kid (well, she is), and Rimone not appreciating it... love that look :) Anyways, the main character, Aaeru, didn't show up until the last few minutes this time so I don't know about her. For now I'll keep on watching, just for Noto, of course.
